History of Dismas House

Dismas is the name of the thief on the cross next to Jesus Christ who, in his dying hour, asked Jesus to remember him when he came into his kingdom. Jesus answered and told him, “This day you shall be with me in paradise.” This is the basis of our guiding principle; it’s never too late to change.

Since 1972, Dismas House of Kansas City Inc. has provided counseling and support services to men and women, most of whom have obstructed the law at some point in their lives. Dismas House, which was launched in Kansas City by Father Jim Flanagan, Sulley Sullivan and Rev. Everett Thornton is a community-based treatment center that consistently experiences outcomes that exceed national benchmarks for substance abuse and corrections counseling.
